The Royal Court announced last week the demise of Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Deputy Premier and Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General (May Allah bless his soul ). 'With his demise, the nation and the world have lost one of the most prominent leaders, who had worked for the service of his religion, nation and humanity as a whole.

The following is a biography of the deceased Crown Prince: He was born in Riyadh on Shaaban 16, 1349AH corresponding to January 5, 1931AD; brought up by his father, the late King Abdulaziz (May Allah bless his soul), the Founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, learnt the Holy Quran and Arabic language by senior scholars, and expanded his knowledge through diplomacy and visits.

Crown Prince Sultan participated in most of Saudi official delegations headed by the Late King Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud (May Allah bless his soul), to attend Arab and Islamic Summits and the sessions of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

Crown Prince Sultan headed official delegations on many visits abroad, including the celebrations of the United Nations in 1406 AH corresponding to 1985 AD on its 40th anniversary, and in 1416 AH corresponding to 1995 on the 50th anniversary, and in 1426AH , corresponding to 2005, on the 60th anniversary.

In Dhu Al-Qaadah 1428AH. he headed the delegation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to OPEC 3rd Summit in Riyadh. Since the era of his father the Late King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud, the Crown Prince has assumed the following posts:

- The Governor of Riyadh on Rabie Al-Akher 1, 1366 AH corresponding to February 22, 1947 AD.

- The Minister of Agriculture on Rabie Al-Akher 18, 1373AH corresponding to December 24, 1953 AD.

- The Minister of Transport on Rabie Al-Awwal 20, 1375AH corresponding to November 5, 1955 AD.

- The Minister of Defense and Aviation on Jumada Al-Akher 3, 1382 AH, corresponding to October 21, 1962 AD.

- The Second Deputy Premier on Shaaban 21, 1402AH corresponding to June 13, 1982AD, in addition to his responsibilities as Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General.

-The Crown Prince, Deputy Premier on Jumada Al-Akher 26, 1426AH corresponding to August 1, 2005 AD, in addition to his responsibilities as Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General.

- An Honorary Doctorate from the Islamic University of Malaysia in 2000.

- An Honorary Doctorate from University of Al-Jazirah in Sudan in 2001.

- Sheikh Rashid Award for Humanitarian Personality in 2002.

- An Honorary Doctorate from British University of Cranfield for Space and Aviation Sciences. The university also selected the Crown Prince as the Personality of the Year 2003, in recognition of his efforts in the field of civil and military aviation.

- Prize of Peace and Environment from Arab-European Cooperation Center in 2003.

- An Honorary Doctorate from the University of Waseda of Japan in 2006.

- An Honorary Doctorate from Moscow Institute of International Relations of Russian Federation in November 2007.

- An Honorary Doctorate from King Saud University in Riyadh in September, 2008.

The Crown Prince has a record of charitable deeds at home and abroad, and he has established two charities to achieve humanitarian and social objectives through Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Foundation and Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Special Committee for Relief.

Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Foundation is a non-profitable organization established by the Crown Prince in 1416AH corresponding to 1995 AD. The Foundation has a number of humanitarian and social goals in the provision of social and health care, comprehensive rehabilitation of people with special needs and the elderly people, in addition to its significant activities in support of researches in the field of humanitarian and medical services, and technical sciences in collaboration with prestigious research centers in the world.

Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Special Committee for Relief aims to provide humanitarian and relief emergency services. In implementation of the Crown Prince's directives, the Committee began in Niger in 1998 under the name of the Special Committee for Relief in Niger, then Mali was annexed to the Committee in 1419AH, corresponding to 1999, and later in 1421AH. corresponding to 2000AD, it extended its work to include Chad, Ethiopia, Malawi, Djibouti and other countries. The Committee has sent relief and medical convoys to combat common diseases such as malaria and blindness, and has set up several developmental, social and health projects including digging wells, building schools, public libraries, mosques, hospitals and dialysis centers in these countries.
