Prince Khalid: Water is kingdom's most important resource

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, Crown Prince keen on rationalizing use of such wealth

Each citizen has to make good use of water, avoid wasting it

Prince Khalid Bin Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, Assistant Minister of Defense and Aviation and Inspector General for Military Affairs, launched at King Saud University in Riyadh the "Prince Khalid bin Sultan Chair for Water Research".

The launching was attended by Minister of Water and Electricity, Abdullah bin Abdulrahman Al Husayn.

Prince Khalid was received by the university's Rector, Dr. Abdullah Al-Othman as well as a number of officials and university professors.

The chair aims at enhancing the re-usage of sewage water as well as developing advanced water-treatment technologies in order to make it suitable for uses other than drinking such as: irrigation, recreational purposes as well as other industrial needs.

Prince Khalid delivered a speech in which he emphasized the need for clean water. "We're talking about water, a precious resource to the Kingdom", Prince Khalid said.

"The fact that there's an independent Ministry dealing with water issues stems from the King's interest in preserving water", the prince added.

Prince Khalid also conveyed the Crown Prince's greetings to the audience reassuring them about his health condition. "The Crown Prince sends you his greetings and he'd like to assure you that he's recovering very well and will be back in the near future”, Prince Khalid went on.

Meanwhile, Under the patronage of Prince Khalid Al-Faisal Bin Abdulaziz, Governor of Makkah Region, the 8th meeting of the Saudi Society for Geosciences will be held at Hilton Hotel in Jeddah on Monday, 09 March, 2009 for four days under the slogan "Serving the Earth”.

The meeting will host a number of researchers and scientists from outside the Kingdom.

This was announced by Dr. Zuhair Abdulhafeez Nawab, President of Saudi Geological Survey (SGS) on the sidelines of MENA-EX currently held in Jeddah.

The meeting is planned to cover all aspects of the earth sciences and engineering with poster presentations. It is an international meeting where geoscientists from all over the world will be invited.

The main objective of the meeting is to deepen and strengthen the relationship among the geoscientists interested in earth sciences to share knowledge and experience, to exchange information and experiences relating to earth science, to maintain scientific contacts among geoscientists, to develop scientific and professional performance, and to identify the latest technology in different earth science.

The themes of the meeting will be on environmental geology and mine waste management, hydrogeology, water resources development, earthquakes, volcanism, geo-hazards, sedimentology, stratigraphy, petroleum geology, geochemistry, marine geology, structural geology, remote sensing, GIS and tectonics, Arabian –Nubian shield, mineral resources and mining development.
